5 Most Notable Free Agents Ahead Of The 2020-21 Transfer Market

Several star players will be available as free agents ahead of the 2020-21 season. Even though there’s no certainty on when the leagues will resume around the world, we do know one thing. These five players listed below will be available for free when the upcoming transfer market opens in the next few months.

Mario Götze – Dortmund

Götze will always be remembered as the player who scored the winning goal during the 2014 FIFA World Cup. However, the Germany international and current Borussia Dortmund star is far more than that. A gifted playmaker capable of playing all over the attacking third, he seems set to leave Dortmund for the second time in his career. Could a reunion with Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool be on the cards? That shouldn’t be ruled out, as Liverpool do not have a player able to fill the n°10 role naturally on a regular basis.

Willian – Chelsea

Willian has spent most of his career at Chelsea, but the Brazilian winger apparently already decided to leave the Stamford Bridge outfit once the current season ends – at any time that happens. The former Shakhtar Donetsk star and current Brazilian international could be considered a seasoned veteran but, at 31 years of age, he still has a lot left in the tank. Expect him to be one of the biggest names available on a free once the upcoming transfer market opens.

Edinson Cavani – PSG

The Uruguay international will go down as one of the best players to ever play for PSG due to his goalscoring ability, but it seems his best years are well behind him. Eclipsed by both Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, the former Palermo and Napoli star decided against extending his current deal at the Parc des Princes and will be a sought-after free agent next summer. He was close to join Atletico Madrid during January and, based on recent reports, he’s either joining Atletico or Penarol once the current season comes to an end.

David Silva – Manchester City

Silva’s departure from Manchester City shouldn’t be a surprise for any European football fan, as the Spain international announced his decision to leave the Etihad Stadium well before the start of the 2019-20 season. The biggest question lies on what he wants to do with his future, as the former Valencia star has two options. If he wants to stay in a competitive environment, then AC Milan are a decent alternative for him. If not, countries like Japan, China and the United States are eagerly waiting for a player of his calibre. It’s up to him on what he wants to do next in his career.

Dries Mertens – Napoli

Out of all the names in this list, Mertens must be the one with the highest upside. The Napoli winger recently became the team’s all-time leading scorer and, at 32 years of age, he can still be effective for a top team – either as a winger or as a striker, the role he has been fulfilling for Napoli over the past few years. Chelsea have been very vocal in his pursuit, but other teams are expected to be involved after he didn’t sign a new deal with the Partenopei side during January. In any case, he would be a welcomed addition for any team looking to add firepower upfront ahead of the 2020-21 campaign.
