Competition: Irish Premier Division
Market: Derry City half-time/full-time
Odds: 7/10 @
Smelling the chance to lay down another Premier Division marker on Wednesday night, Derry will travel to Dublin when they meet UCD.
Starting with the hosts, while UCD might have eventually clung to their Premier Division status last season, the Students find themselves in the midst of another extended top-flight struggle. Sat rock-bottom of the table and remarkably 20 points adrift of finding a route out of the drop zone, Andrew Myler’s side are already planning for their First Division return in 2023. Last seen putting in another woeful display as they slumped to a 3-0 drumming at the hands of Drogheda, the Blues have now lost each of their previous three appearances by an aggregate score of 9-1. Gaining a real reputation for their rather glaring issues at the back, it should also be noted that Wednesday’s hosts have recorded just a single win from any of their previous nine appearances across all formats. Crashing out of the FAI Cup on August 21st following an infamous 5-1 defeat at home against First Division outfit Galway, UCD will be more than aware that they face another monumental challenge here.
As for the visitors, while UCD might be in the midst of a public Premier Division crisis, Derry certainly find the mood in their camp at a high. Despite watching their Europa Conference League qualifying adventure come to an abrupt end last month, the Candystripes aren’t showing any signs of a hangover. Last seen over the weekend putting in a rampant display as they claimed a stellar 3-1 victory away at Dundalk, Ruaidhri Higgins’ side will certainly be smelling the chance to make another statement here. Breezing their way to another top-three finish this season, Wednesday’s guests should also be excited by a rampant record against the leading relegation scrapper. In fact, landing a routine 4-1 romp when they welcomed UCD to the Brandywell Stadium back on May 19th, Derry have won each of their last seven straight meetings a run that stems back to July 2019. Two sides who are firmly battling it out at opposite ends of the table, it is hard to see anything other than an away win here.
